Landline Calling Mode and Yahoo Messenger Calling Mode
If you have a telephone line connected to the USB Phone Adapter , you can place and receive regular telephone calls as usual. The Adapter is set by default to landline mode. When you pick up the phone connected to the Adapter, you will hear your regular landline dial tone.
The phone will ring when you get an incoming landline or incoming Skype call. Just pick up the phone to answer as you normally would.
To switch to Yahoo Messenger calling mode, dial *. You will hear a different dial tone. Now you can call a Phone Out number or speed-dial a Yahoo Messenger contact from your phone's keypad (see details below).
Dialing Yahoo Messenger Phone Out
If you have Yahoo Messenger Phone Out credit, you can dial any regular phone number (Phone Out) from the keypad using this format:
Country code + area code + phone number + #
For example, a phone number in the United States would be dialed:
1 310 555 1212 then #
1 |
Country Code |
310 |
Area Code |
555 1212 |
Phone Number |
# |
Sends the phone number to Yahoo Messenger and places the call |

Phone Out lets you choose your default Country code. If you choose USA, for example, you would not need to dial the counrty code when dialing a domestic call. For example:
310 555 1212 then #
Speed-Dial a Yahoo Messenger Contact
You can dial any of your Yahoo Messenger Contacts directly from the phone's keypad using a speed-dial key sequence.
First, in Yahoo Messenger you need to rename the Contact's nickname so that it begins with a two digit number.
- Right click on the Contact and choose "Contact details".
- Assign or Rename "Nickname" to begin with a two digit number. For example, Contact "Nastassia" is renamed "12 Nastassia".
- Click Save & Close Contact Details window.

Likewise, change any other Contacts' names to begin with unique two digit numbers.
Then when you want to call a Yahoo Messenger Contact from your phone's keypad, just dial the two digit number you have assigned to that Contact, and press # # to place the call.
For example to call "12 Nastassia", dial:
12 # #
Audio Settings in Yahoo Messenger and Windows
In the Yahoo Messenger window, go to Messenger --> Preferences --> Calling & Audio and select "USB Audio Device" for "Microphone", "Speakers", and optionally, "Ringer".

Windows will normally recognize the USB Phone Adapter as the default audio device when you plug it into a USB port on your computer. You should then be able to use it for Yahoo Messenger conversations without changing any settings.
However, you may want to specify the USB Phone Adapter for Yahoo Messenger audio only, while using your PC soundcard for other audio(music, etc):
- Go to Windows Start --> Settings --> Control panel --> Sounds and audio devices
- Go to "Audio" tab and select your PC's sound card as Sound playback default device.
- Go to "Voice"' tab and select your PC's sound card as Sound playback default device.
YahooMate Advanced Settings

Right-click the
icon in system tray and select "Option":
Adaptor default channel: PSTN or USB
This determines the calling mode you're in when you pick up the phone.
PSTN: You will be in landline mode when you pick up the phone. You will hear your regular dial tone and can simply dial a landline call as you normally would. (Or press * to switch to USB mode). The USB Phone Adapter's default setting is PSTN mode.
USB: You will be in Yahoo Messenger calling mode when you pick up the phone. This is useful if you want to use a regular phone to make and receive only Yahoo Messenger calls.
Note: A phone connected to the adapter will ring for both regular landline and Internet calls, whether you have set "adaptor default channel" to PSTN or USB. Just pick up the phone to answer as you normally would.
YahooMate Troubleshooting
The YahooMate icon in System Tray will show its status:
Green- Connected and running properly.
Red- USB Phone Adapter is not connected properly. Unplug and reconnect USB cable. Also make sure the unit is connected directly to a USB port on your computer- do not connect through an unpowered USB hub.
Grayed out- Make sure Yahoo Messenger is running.
