You normally press the * key on your phone to switch between landline and Skype modes.
However, your landline may already require the * key for other uses. For example, you may dial *98 to retrieve your landline voice mail, or *69 to redial last incoming caller, etc. This would cause a conflict with the USB Adapter, since dialing * would switch you to USB(Skype) mode.
To avoid this conflict, you can change the adapter's default landline-to-Skype switch key from * to another key, or key sequence (such as 9, 98, *9, **, etc, whatever you prefer)
In this example, let's say you want to use ** instead of *
Windows Users
(updated 4/19/07: These new instuctions work with SkypeMate version 3.0.1.33 or later):
- Close SkypeMate - In system tray, right click the SkypeMate icon
and select Exit.
- Click on Start -> Run and type in %appdata%
- The ApplicationData folder will appear in a window, open the SkypeMate folder
- Open the "Custom.ini" file in Notepad
- Find the following line (located about 3/4 of the way down):
szBoxTurnCommand = *
Change to
szBoxTurnCommand = **
- Save and close Custom.ini and restart SkypeMate.
Now when you want to switch between landline and Skype mode, dial ** on your phone's keypad.

Mac OS X Users:
SkyMACMate also has a Custom.ini file and can be customised in the same way (make sure you quit SkyMACMate first).
To find the Custom.ini file in Mac, control-click(right click) on the SkyMACMate.app file and choose "Show Package Contents". Open Contents folder, then MacOS folder.
Open the Custom.ini file found here with a text editor(such as TextEdit.app).
Change szBoxTurnCommand = * to szBoxTurnCommand = **. Save and close Custom.ini
Restart SkyMACMate. (You may need to 'refresh' SkyMACMate at this point. I find that moving the speaker or microphone slider back and forth a bit in the SkyMACMate control window will 'refresh' it.)
Now when you want to switch between landline and Skype mode, dial ** on your phone's keypad.
